Staff Scientist Research Location: San Carlos, CA, USA Position Summary Natera is a pioneer in individualized genetic testing. Our cutting-edge technology platform combines novel molecular biology techniques that allows detection down to a single molecule in a tube of blood. We have leveraged this platform to develop the most accurate non-invasive prenatal test on the market, the first tumor-specific assay for individualized cancer care and best-in-class rejection assessment for organ transplantation, among other transformative cfDNA tests. We are looking for a creative Staff Scientist to initiate, direct and execute sophisticated genome research in the organ transplant field. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problem solving. Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art genome technologies and new developments in the transplant, immunology and protein biomarker field. Primary Responsibilities Contributes substantially to research and development. Develops plans, generates and advances new ideas Leads projects to create and develop novel nucleic acid or protein based diagnostic tests; including planning, feasibility testing, protocol development, optimization. Responsible for designing and executing projects as per associated timelines and deliverables Thoroughly comprehends the objectives and vision of the work Performs basic data analysis, including statistics Documents research progress under a Quality Management System May manage Research Scientists May work with partners and outside collaborators Communicates progress directly with colleagues and senior management This role works with PHI on a regular basis both in paper and electronic form and has access to various technologies to access PHI (paper and electronic) in order to perform the job Employee must complete training relating to HIPAA/PHI privacy, General Policies and Procedure Compliance training and security training as soon as possible but not later than the first 30 days of hire. Must maintain a current status on Natera training requirements. Qualifications Ph.D. in molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry or closely related field Minimum 2 years Post-doctoral research and 6 years of industry experience Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Must have hands-on experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies and basic molecular biology techniques, including epigenetic/methylation, target enrichment, cfDNA/RNA Must have experience in data analysis, statistics, data interpretation and results reporting. Track record of originating, developing and productizing novel nucleic acid techniques and tests Must have excellent communication, organizational, record-keeping, planning and time management skills Proven success in managing collaborative and individual projects. Demonstrated success in applying independent scientific judgment in experimental design and analysis Very strong analytical and problem-solving skills Adept with data analysis and statistical testing using Excel, JMP, R or other data analysis environments Bioinformatics capabilities, programming (e.g. PERL, python) and database experience (SQL) are a plus Skilled at writing clear plans, reports and SOPs Physical Demands & Work Environment This position requires the ability to use a computer keyboard, communicate over the telephone and read printed material. Duties may require working outside normal working hours (evenings and weekends) at times.
