Founded in 1977, EdSource is a highly-respected independent, nonprofit organization with the largest team of state-based education reporters in the nation. Our principal focus is on California, within the context of education reform and innovation nationally.EdSource is seeking an enterprising data journalist to join our growing team to analyze and present data in a way that will break new ground on issues of interest to California readers and beyond.The data journalist will work collaboratively with editors, reporters and the web developer/designer to produce interactive data-driven stories and web graphics that help translate complicated information into stories that engage and educate readers on California's new school funding model, learning standards and the assessments that are reshaping the future of the state's public education system.Duties and Responsibilities:* Brainstorming and suggesting opportunities for data-driven stories and projects* Obtaining, cleaning and analyzing data to produce compelling stories* Producing graphics and working with data visualization specialist to turn data into reader friendly visuals including interactive maps* Obtaining data from public agencies using, if needed, the state and federal right to know laws* Maintain and renew data sets that are routinely used by the newsroom* Work with beat reporters to generate data-driven stories and improve the quality and representation of data accompanying their stories.* Teach and encourage best practices and newsroom data policies.Qualifications:* Proficiency in using analytical tools and instruments such as Excel, Microsoft Access, SPSS, SQL, RStudio, MySQL* Experience analyzing state and federal education data* Knowledge of state and national public education data sources* Mapping skills and working with shapefiles in mapping software such as QGIS* Knowledge and experience obtaining and analyzing data. Experience with California data a plus* Someone who sees education stories and projects in other data sets whether they originate in state government agencies or federal agencies* Basic understanding of school systems and school reporting requirements; and of factors and issues related to validity, reliability, and accuracy of different types of school data* Strong interpersonal and verbal communications skills to work with EdSource colleagues, agency staff and technical staff at public and private research agencies* Background in interviewing and reporting a plus* Writing ability to highlight data analysis results preferred* Strong organizational skillsAlong with the opportunity to do meaningful work with a team of experienced journalists, EdSource offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes a range of medical plans, a retirement savings plan, generous vacation leave and paid holidays, as well as professional development opportunities.To Apply:Send a cover letter, resume and contact information for three references, links to your social media accounts and links to, or attachments of, four to six examples of your written/digital work to email@example.com.
