Job Description / Essential Elements: Print SENIOR MAINTENANCE MECHANIC DEFINITION Under general supervision, performs semi skilled and skilled trades work at a journey level, usually on major projects; and performs related work as required. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS A major portion of the incumbent's time in this class is spent in performing skilled building trades work. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Sets up and operates precision machinery, including lathes, mills, choppers, and surface grinders. E Fabricates replacement parts, shafts, and original designs including sheet metal parts, lockers, machine guards, and aluminum parts. E Performs field and bench gas, arc, and heliarc welding. E Repairs and replaces pumps, tanks, valves, piping, and circulation systems in pools. E Fabricates and installs structural steel. E Performs hard surface re-machining; performs concrete work. E Repairs roof leaks. E Installs and maintains gas and electric appliances and heaters; installs heating, ventilating and air conditioning, and maintains EMS energy management systems. E Installs sinks, urinals, toilets, and floor tiles. E Installs lighting fixtures. E Installs panic hardware. E Designs and constructs wooden enclosures and cabinets. E Maintains District equipment; requisitions supplies and parts; maintains labor and material records. E Directs the work of assigned helpers. E Operates District vehicles. E Performs related work as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: 1. Gas, arc, and heliarc welding; 2. Building trades labor and material cost; 3. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; 4. Simple record keeping; 5. Shop math applicable to building trades; 6. Proper methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the building trades; 7. General principles of supervision and training; and 8. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Ability to: 1. Read blueprints and diagrams; 2. Use hand and power tools skillfully and safely; 3. Operate a forklift; 4. Perform shop mathematics; 5. Perform skilled level plumbing, carpentry, welding, sheet metal, and other building trades work. 6. Plan and lay out work, including estimating labor and material costs; 7. Maintain simple records; 8. Supervise the work of others; 9. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; 10. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; 11. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and 12. Maintain work pace appropriate to given workload. EDUCATION Individuals possessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above are considered to possess the necessary education. EXPERIENCE Recent responsible work at a skilled level in the building trades. WORKING CONDITIONS Environment: Indoor and outdoor work environment; subject to noise from equipment operation; regular exposure to fumes, dust, dirt, oil/grease; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work. Physical Abilities: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized equipment and tools; seeing to observe needed and completed repairs; climbing ladders and working from heights; reaching overhead and horizontally; standing for extended periods of time; walking over rough or uneven surfaces; lifting heavy objects weighing up to 100 pounds; bending at the waist; kneeling or crouching. Hazards: Vapors from paints and solvents; working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber; working with power saws and flying debris; working at heights on ladders or scaffolding; working with electrical power supply.
