Politics Editor Are you energized by the challenge of helping readers understand how California's distinctive politics affects their lives and shapes the national debate? The San Francisco Chronicle has an opening for an ambitious, resourceful and collaborative editor to lead political coverage across the newsroom. This editor will supervise a team of reporters in San Francisco, Sacramento and Washington, D.C., with a goal of producing best-in-class coverage of the stories that matter most to readers in the Bay Area and Northern California. This team has broken some of the biggest stories in the state and creates an array of journalism, including podcasts, newsletters, election guides and live events. This is the team that recently produced the podcast series, 'Chronicled: Who is Kamala Harris,' revealed that Gov. Gavin Newsom attended a dinner party at the French Laundry despite pandemic restrictions, and exposed the saga of Capt. Brett Crozier aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Few topics are off-limits and can range from the lofty electoral ambitions of local politicians to the most critical policy issues California faces: climate change, justice reform, housing, homelessness, wildfires, water and more. We are looking for a positive communicator who can help journalists come up with ideas, work with them at every step of the process, make creative decisions about how stories should be presented, and partner with photographers, artists, designers and others to make stories resonate. Strong skills in news judgment and editing are a must: The goal is to provide readers meticulously reported and sharply written stories, with a deep commitment to journalism that is fair and reflects a diversity of viewpoints. What you will do: ● Supervise a team of political reporters in San Francisco, Sacramento and Washington, D.C. ● Edit and develop your team, while taking a leadership role in organizing and improving political coverage across the newsroom. ● Work collaboratively with other teams, including digital, photo and design, while pitching ideas for projects, videos and podcasts. ● Coordinate the long-term planning of the most in-depth stories, managing timelines and workflows. ● Ensure that reporting reflects the diversity of experiences and needs in the Bay Area and Northern California. What it will take to be successful: ● At least five years' experience at a daily newspaper, magazine or web publication or the equivalent as a reporter or editor. ● Preferably, the candidate should work from the San Francisco or Sacramento areas. ● Demonstrated expertise in political coverage, strong news judgment, creativity and meticulousness. ● Knowledge of multimedia storytelling, social media engagement and other strategies to broaden readership and deepen impact. ● Ability to collaborate with all newsroom teams and work in a fast-changing news environment.
