This position under general directions with limited review will apply innovative approaches to design and implement optical measurement systems, with an emphasis on laser and imaging applications.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:* Develop and improve optical diagnostic techniques; including design, modeling, fabrication, integration, testing and troubleshooting of the system components.* Devise new approaches in the design, analyses and test of new diagnostic components and systems. This requires familiarity with electromagnetic and light transmission theories, and the use of numerical simulation tools. May develop and/or perform computational modeling of scientific phenomena.* Develop and document data processing and analysis algorithms.* Document all designs, analyses, test results and conclusions, and communicate results to staff and community via technical presentations and publications.* Maintain a general knowledge of advanced diagnostics. Leverage the progress in laser and imaging technologies to develop new measurement approaches.* Work with scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop requirements for diagnostic systems and components.* Provide direction to engineering, design and technical staff. May lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.* Perform other duties as assigned.
