The City of Bakersfield is now accepting applications for the position of Police Officer - Academy Graduate/Lateral. The Eligibility Lists established from this continuous recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies within this classification.

Patrols a designated area of the city to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, and to enforce motor vehicle regulations; issues traffic citations; answers calls and complaints involving fires, traffic accidents, robberies, and other misdemeanors and felonies; at accident scenes administers first aid, conducts investigation, gathers evidence, obtains witnesses, makes arrests; assists in preparation of safety education and training schedules and programs; conducts public awareness discussions; searches and books prisoners; records prisoner data and prepares personal property lists; testifies in civil and criminal courts; prepares control records including arrest and disposition records; prepares activity, and special prisoner reports; releases prisoners as instructed; receives complaints from the public by telephone.
POLICE ACADEMY GRADUATE: Must have graduated from a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified Basic Peace Officer Academy within the last (3) three years.
LATERAL - POLICE OFFICER: Minimum of one (1) year employment as a full-time paid Peace Officer with a P.O.S.T. approved California Law Enforcement agency and possess a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate
All Applicants must meet the following:
AGE: Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment date.
EDUCATION: California P.O.S.T. requires possession of U.S. high school diploma or GED.
CERTIFICATE: P.O.S.T. Certificate must be valid at time of appointment date.
LICENSE: Must possess a valid Class 'C' California driver's license.
PHYSICAL CONDITION/VISION: Good physical condition. Vision and physical conditions must satisfy established POST Medical Standards as provided on their website: http://post.ca.gov/medical-screening-manual.aspx CITIZENSHIP: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship.
FELONY: Record must be free from any felony convictions.
Highly Preferred: Applicants with ability to unite and interact with a diverse population; a commitment to serving all members of their community with sensitivity, empathy, and impartiality.
As part of the requirement to be considered for the Police Officer - Academy Graduate/Lateral position, applicants need to complete and submit a Personal History Statement (PHS) and Pre-Investigative Background Questionnaire (PIBQ) upon selection to move forward in the examination process. Examination (Weighted: 100%):
The selection process will begin with an employment application screening, with the best qualified candidate being invited to participate further in the examination process. Qualified applicants will be invited to a Physical Agility. Candidates who are successful in the Physical Agility exam MAY be invited to continue to compete in Oral Examination process.
